Method comparisonMost home cleaning machines are hot water extraction machines there are other methods available.

Hot Water Extraction Cleaning. This method uses a hot water solution, containing a cleaning agent, that is injected into the carpet or upholstery and then followed with a vacuum system that extracts the soil and used solution. This is possibly the most frequently used method today, and the method most recommended by carpet manufacturers, as it allows for the deepest of fiber cleaning possible.

Bonnet Cleaning. This begins with a pre-spray of solution onto the carpet. A rotary machine, with a large absorbent pad or bonnet attached to the bottom of the machine, rotates from side to side over the carpet. As each pass is made, soil from the carpet is transferred to the pad or bonnet. These are replaced as they become soiled during the cleaning process. This method is recommended for those carpets which have spot and stains. When reviews of carpet cleaning machines were evaluated, i did not find any home Bonnet cleaning machines.

Shampoo Cleaning. This type of cleaning involves a soap detergent being scrubbed into the carpet with a bristle brush attached to the bottom of a rotary machine. This is dried and then vacuumed to absorb the soil and any soap residue as well. Again, this method is recommended only for those carpets where soil concentration is minimal.
